Which address do back in stock emails come from, and how do I keep them out of spam?

Updated · SMART Preorder & Back in stock (E-TRADE PARTNER)

Back in stock emails go out from no-reply@alerts.smart-preorder.com with your store name as the sender name, and replies go to your store's contact email. To send from your own address, verify your domain in Settings > Email sender. If too many emails bounce or get reported as spam, the app pauses your back in stock sending.

SMART Preorder & Back in stock is a free Shopify app for pre-orders, deposits, and back-in-stock alerts.

Pre-order emails: confirmation, shipping update, upcoming charge reminder, payment failedno-reply@orders.smart-preorder.com

Back in stock emails have their own address so that a restock with many bounces can't hurt the order and payment emails. In Settings > Email sender you set the Sender name (empty: your store name) and the Reply-to email (empty: your store contact email from Shopify Settings > Store details).

Send from your own address

  1. Go to Settings > Email sender. In the Sending address card, click Use your own address.
  2. Enter an address on your store's own domain and click Connect. Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo and other mailbox addresses can't be verified. A subdomain, like orders@mail.yourstore.com, keeps your main domain's email reputation separate.
  3. Add the DNS records the card shows (Type, Name, Value) at your domain provider. For a domain bought through Shopify: Settings, Domains, your domain, DNS settings. Some providers add your domain to the name by themselves: then enter only the part before it. On Cloudflare, set the records to DNS only.
  4. Click Check now. Checking usually takes minutes, sometimes up to 72 hours. The app also checks in the background, so you don't need to keep the page open.

Once the card shows Verified, all your customer emails, pre-order and back in stock, go out from your address. Until then, and if the domain stops verifying, they go out from ours, so nothing is held back. If the records weren't found, the card shows Records not found and a Check again button. Change address switches to another address, and Stop sending from it goes back to our address (to use the domain again later, you verify it again).

Emails the app sends to you as the store owner, like the daily limit notice, always come from our address.

Bounces and blocked addresses

  • Only hard bounces count, like an address that doesn't exist. A full mailbox doesn't.
  • Each store has its own block list at our email provider. An address that hard-bounced, or reported one of your emails as spam, gets no more emails from your store, pre-order emails included. Other stores' emails aren't affected. You can't see or clear the list in the app, and the signup may still show Notified, so reach that shopper another way.
  • The signup form turns away addresses on domains that can't receive email, so typos like gmail.con never get on your list. Imported lists skip that check.

When back in stock sending is paused

The app pauses a store's sending when, over the last 7 days, more than 3% of its emails hard-bounce or more than 0.1% are reported as spam (at least 2 reports). One typo doesn't pause a store: it takes a minimum number of emails, which is lower for stores on the lower levels. While paused:

  • back in stock emails wait. They aren't lost, and go out once the pause is lifted,
  • order and payment emails still go out, from our address,
  • custom email code and CSV import are off,
  • Settings > Email sender shows Sending from your address is paused, and a manual send from Signups says sending is paused.

Only our team lifts a pause. Click Contact us on the banner and we'll look at it with you. The usual cause is an imported list of people who never asked for these emails.

Unsubscribes

  • Every back in stock email has an unsubscribe link and a one-click unsubscribe that mail apps show next to the sender.
  • The link opens a page on your store's own domain with Stop alerts for this product and Stop all alerts from this store. Just opening the page changes nothing, because mail scanners open links too. The mail app's own unsubscribe stops all alerts at once.
  • Unsubscribed signups stay in Signups as Unsubscribed and are never emailed again, by restock or by hand. Imports and new form signups skip them.
  • Only the shopper can undo it, with Turn alerts back on on the page shown after unsubscribing.
  • If you write your own email code, keep the unsubscribe link: back in stock emails must let customers unsubscribe.

Keep emails out of spam

  • Send from your own verified domain, and set a reply-to address someone reads.
  • Only import shoppers who asked to hear from you about that product.
  • Keep the default subject and body plain. Custom code can't be saved with shortened links (like bit.ly), links to an IP address, lookalike domains or forms.
  • Don't send by hand to a list that was notified long ago.

Frequently asked questions

›Can I send back in stock emails from my Gmail address?

No. The address must be on a domain you own, because you have to add DNS records to verify it. Gmail, Outlook and similar addresses can't be verified. Use the Reply-to email field to get replies at any address.

›A customer says they get no emails from my store anymore. Why?

If their address hard-bounced or they reported one of your emails as spam, it's on your store's block list and gets no more emails from your store. It can't be cleared in the app, so contact the customer another way.
