Hide, sort and rename payment methods at Shopify checkout
Updated · SMART Preorder & Back in stock (E-TRADE PARTNER)
SMART Preorder includes payment customizations: rules that hide, reorder or rename the payment methods Shopify shows at checkout, either always or only when conditions match, such as the country, cart total, products, customer tags or a B2B buyer. They run as Shopify payment customization functions inside Shopify's checkout, need no theme changes, and are free.
SMART Preorder & Back in stock is a free Shopify app for pre-orders, deposits, and back-in-stock alerts.

Payment rules are the app's oldest feature: it started as Hide & Sort Payments, before pre-orders were added. They work on their own. You don't need a pre-order campaign or the app embed to use them.
What a customization can do
Each customization has a name (only you see it), a When this customization runs choice (Always or When conditions are met), conditions, and one or more actions. All its actions run together when the conditions match.
| Action | What it does |
|---|---|
| Hide all payment methods | Hides every payment method at checkout |
| Hide specific payment method(s) | Hides the methods whose name matches |
| Show only specific payment method(s) | Keeps the matching methods and hides all the others |
| Move payment method to the top | Moves the first matching method to first place |
| Move payment method to the bottom | Moves the first matching method to last place |
| Reorder a specific payment method | Moves the first matching method to a Position you set, counted from 0 |
| Rename payment method(s) | Shows a New name (up to 75 characters) for the matching methods |
Methods are matched by name with whose name is or whose name contains, ignoring upper and lower case. You can list several names in one action. Guides: Hide payment methods and Sort and rename payment methods.

How it works with Shopify
- The app saves each customization in Shopify as a payment customization that runs one of the app's Shopify Functions. Shopify runs it in checkout and applies its hide, move and rename operations (Payment Customization Function API).
- New customizations save as Inactive, so nothing changes at checkout until you click Activate.
- Your active customizations from every app are listed in Shopify admin under Settings > Payments, in the Payment customizations section (Shopify Help Center). The app's own list shows only its customizations.
- Shopify allows up to 25 active payment customizations per store, across all apps.
- Customizations apply in Shopify checkout, B2B checkouts and draft order invoice checkouts. They don't run in Point of Sale, and in the Shop Pay flow Shopify applies them only to the gift card field (About functions in payments).
- Payment customization apps need the Shopify Basic plan or higher.
Who uses payment rules
- Cash on delivery stores: hide COD outside your delivery countries, above a cart total, for fragile or heavy products, or for first-time customers.
- Wholesale and B2B: show invoice or bank transfer only to tagged customers or business customers, and hide card methods they shouldn't use.
- Stores selling across countries: put the method each country prefers at the top, with one customization per country group.
- Pre-order stores: hide methods you don't want on pre-order carts. A recipe is in Payment rule recipes.
- Promotions: hide cash on delivery while a discount is applied.
- Clearer checkout labels: rename a manual method to something buyers understand, for example "Bank transfer (we ship after payment)".
Limits to know
Most limits come from Shopify and apply to every payment customization app.
- Credit cards in the US and Canada. Outside Shopify Plus, stores there can customize only non-credit-card methods (Shopify Help Center).
- Wallets. Methods shown as a logo, such as Shop Pay, Apple Pay and Google Pay, all other wallets and the gift card field, can't be renamed. Wallets can be hidden but not reordered (About functions in payments). When the app hides a wallet, its express checkout button goes too.
- Hidden stays hidden. Shopify functions can hide, move and rename, but not unhide. A method hidden by any active customization stays hidden, so put exceptions inside the broad rule.
- Only existing methods. The app can't create or connect a payment method, add fees or surcharges, or change icons and descriptions. A method must be active in Settings > Payments first.
- No condition on the payment method the buyer picks, and none for Shopify Markets (use Country) or the billing address.
- Size. A customization with very long lists of products, collections or tags can be too large for Shopify checkout; the editor tells you so before saving.
- Checkouts that replace Shopify's. Payment customizations run only in Shopify's own checkout.
If Apple Pay or another wallet doesn't show, see Wallet or Apple Pay missing.

›Do I need to set up pre-orders to use payment rules?
No. Payment customizations work on their own, without a campaign and without the app embed.
›Can I hide only the Shop Pay or PayPal express button and keep it in the payment list?
No. When the app hides a wallet, both its express button and its entry in the payment list go.
›Why can't I hide or move the credit card method?
In the United States and Canada, Shopify limits payment customizations to non-credit-card methods unless the store is on Shopify Plus.
›Can I copy a customization?
There's no duplicate button for payment customizations. Click Create customization and set the conditions and actions again.
