# How do I reorder or rename payment methods at Shopify checkout?

Create a payment customization and add **Move payment method to the top**, **Move payment method to the bottom** or **Reorder a specific payment method**; to change a label, add **Rename payment method(s)** with a **New name**. Save and click **Activate**. Shopify doesn't let any app rename or reorder wallets such as Shop Pay, Apple Pay and Google Pay.

## Reorder a payment method

1. Open **Payment customizations** and click **Create customization**. Give it a **Name**.
2. Choose **Always**, or **When conditions are met** to reorder only for some checkouts, for example by **Country**.
3. Click **Add action** and pick one of the **Arrange** actions (table below).
4. Choose **whose name is** or **whose name contains** and type the method's name.
5. For **Reorder a specific payment method**, enter the **Position**.
6. Click **Save**, then **Activate**, and check the order in a fresh checkout.

| --- | --- |
| **Move payment method to the top** | The first method that matches moves to first place. |
| **Move payment method to the bottom** | The first method that matches moves to last place. |
| **Reorder a specific payment method** | The first method that matches moves to **Position**, which counts from 0: 0 is first, 1 is second, 2 is third. |

- Each Arrange action moves one method: the first match. To move several, add one action per method.
- Moves can push each other around. Top and bottom are the most predictable; use exact positions only when you need them.
- There's no A to Z sort.

> **Is the top method selected for the buyer?** Moving a method to first place often makes it the preselected choice, but Shopify doesn't promise which method it preselects, so check in a fresh checkout. For buyers in Finland, Shopify preselects no payment method at all ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/checkout-settings/checkout-customization)).

## Rename a payment method

1. In a customization, click **Add action** and choose **Rename payment method(s)**.
2. Choose **whose name is** or **whose name contains** and enter the current name. Every method that matches gets the new name.
3. Type the **New name**, up to 75 characters, for example "Bank transfer (we ship after payment)".
4. Click **Save**, then **Activate**.

- **One name for every language.** A rename shows the same text in all checkout languages. For translated names, make one customization per language with the **Language** condition and its own rename.
- **Other actions use the original name.** After renaming "Mollie - iDEAL" to "iDEAL", a move or hide still has to match "Mollie - iDEAL" (or contain "ideal").
- **Only the name changes.** The description, icon and logo under a method stay as the provider set them.

## What Shopify doesn't allow

- **Wallets and logos can't be renamed:** Shop Pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay, any other wallet, and the gift card field ([About functions in payments](https://shopify.dev/docs/apps/build/checkout/payments)).
- **Wallets can't be reordered.** They can be hidden, which removes their express button too, but their position is Shopify's.
- **Credit cards in the US and Canada** can be renamed, moved or hidden only on Shopify Plus ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/checkout-settings/checkout-customization)).
- **The Shop Pay flow** ignores renames and moves; there Shopify applies payment customizations only to the gift card field.
- **A manual method named like a wallet** (for example one you created and called "Venmo") is plain text, so it can be renamed and moved like any other manual method.

## Frequently asked questions

### I entered Position 1 and the method ended up second. Why?

Positions count from 0. Enter 0 for first place, or use **Move payment method to the top**.

### Can I put PayPal or Shop Pay at the top?

No. Shopify doesn't let apps reorder wallets. You can move other methods around them, or hide a wallet.

### Can I add a fee or a note to a payment method?

There's no fee option. A short note can go into the method's name with **Rename payment method(s)**, up to 75 characters, except for wallets and other logo methods.
